Jesus: The Way, The Truth, and The Life
P.S: BRENDEN BROWN | March 22, 2026
We are continuing our "Jesus the..." series this week, and it’s no exaggeration to say that this specific topic is one of the most crucial we’ve tackled yet. While we have spent weeks looking at different facets of His character; like Jesus the Shepherd or Jesus the Bread of Life, this message on "The Way, The Truth, and The Life" is the one that encompasses it all.
It is a massive, central pillar of our faith because it addresses the three most fundamental needs of the human heart: direction, reality, and vitality. Without understanding this, the rest of our faith can feel like just another set of rules or a series of disconnected stories. But when we grab hold of this truth, it becomes the foundation that everything else sits on. It changes how we see God, how we see ourselves, and how we walk through this world every single day.
Life can feel like a massive maze sometimes. Between the constant noise on social media and the pressure to "find your own path," it is incredibly easy to feel a bit lost. We all hit those moments where we stop and wonder: Where am I actually going? What can I actually trust? Is there more to life than just getting by?
In John 14:6, Jesus gives us an answer that is just as radical today as it was when He first said it: "Jesus answered, 'I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.'"
At Heirs Church, we believe these aren't just fancy titles. They are the heartbeat of our relationship with God. Let’s talk about what that looks like in our actual, everyday lives.
1. Jesus is THE WAY
Most of us try to build our own bridges to God. We think if we work hard enough, act "religious" enough, or just try to be a "good person," we’ll eventually get there. But the Prophet Jeremiah gives us some great advice for when we’re feeling stuck in Jeremiah 6:16: "This is what the Lord says: 'Stand at the crossroads and look; ask for the ancient paths, ask where the good way is, and walk in it, and you will find rest for your souls. But you said, "We will not walk in it."'
Jesus is that "good way." He didn’t come to give us a complicated map or a long list of directions to memorize. He came to be the road itself. When we choose to walk with Him, we don't have to stress about the destination.
As it says in Psalm 1:6: "For the Lord watches over the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked leads to destruction."
In the earliest days of the church, followers of Jesus Christ did not call themselves “Christians” first.
They were known as: “The People of The Way.”
This tells us something profound about how the earliest believers understood the words of Jesus . They didn’t see Christianity as a religion or a philosophy or even so much a set of doctrines. They saw their lives as a walk with God, a way of life centered on a person. Not a system. A path that led to the presence of God. Jesus was both the access point and the path.
2. Jesus is THE TRUTH
Think back to when Moses stood at the burning bush and asked God for His name. God’s answer was simple in Exodus 3:14: "God said to Moses, 'I AM WHO I AM. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: "I AM has sent me to you."”
When Jesus says He is "The Truth," He’s claiming that same identity. He is the "I AM" in the flesh. In John 14:7-9, Jesus explains that to see Him is to see the heart of God: "If you really know me, you will know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him. Philip said, 'Lord, show us the Father and that will be enough for us.' Jesus answered: 'Don’t you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father.'"
In a world where everyone seems to have their own "personal truth" that changes with the wind, Jesus is the anchor. He’s the one who cuts through the lies we tell ourselves and reminds us of the reality of God’s grace.
3. Jesus is THE LIFE
There is a huge difference between just existing and actually being alive. Jesus told His friends not to let their hearts be troubled in John 14:1: "Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me."
That "life" isn't just something we wait for until we get to heaven; it’s a power we have right now. Jesus actually invites us into this life through prayer. In John 14:13-14, He says: "And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it."
That is the life of God working through us. He’s the one who breathes hope back into dead situations and gives us the energy to keep going when we’re exhausted.
Walking it Out
Being part of the Heirs family means we don’t just read these verses; we live them out. Letting Jesus be the Way, Truth, and Life means finally letting go of the steering wheel and trusting that His path is way better than anything we could dream up on our own.
If you’re feeling a little lost, confused, or just plain empty today, remember that the invitation is always open. You don’t have to figure it all out by yourself. He’s already there at the crossroads, ready to lead you home.
