Jesus: The Miracle Worker

We live in a world where brokenness isn’t just a theological concept: it’s a daily reality. People are hurting, carrying hidden shame, feeling lost, and navigating seasons where tragedy feels relentless. Many of us know what it’s like to sit in the quiet aftermath of a heavy loss, wondering, "Lord, how do I see a way through this?"

In the Scriptures, we see that when human desperation reaches its peak, Jesus doesn't turn away. When life meets death, life wins.

Understanding Jesus as the Miracle Worker begins with understanding His heart. When we grasp how He feels about us, our hearts open to receive what He wants to do in and through our lives.

When Two Crowds Collide

In Luke 7, we read about a powerful encounter outside the town gates of Nain:

“Soon afterward Jesus went with his disciples to the village of Nain, and a large crowd followed him. A funeral procession was coming out as he approached the village gate. The young man who had died was a widow’s only son, and a large crowd from the village was with her.”Luke 7:11-12 NLT ‭‭

Picture the scene. There were two distinct crowds walking in opposite directions:

The first crowd was carrying death. They were immersed in mourning, walking alongside a grieving widow who had just lost her only remaining source of hope, protection, and provision.
The second crowd was carrying life. They were following Jesus, the Prince of Peace, walking in the light of His authority and grace.

When those two crowds collided at the city gate, the Kingdom of God invaded.

In ancient culture, losing an only son meant a widow lost everything: her inheritance, her security, and her future. She was forced into immediate survival mode. Many of us today feel like we are trapped in that exact same survival mode, just hanging on for dear life while wave after wave of grief crashes over us.

Yet, right in the middle of this woman’s deepest heartache, Jesus turned up.

Here are three truths from Scripture about the heart and power of Jesus when you are facing a season of pain:

The Lord Sees You

"When the Lord saw her, his heart went out to her..." Luke 7:13a

Notice that Luke specifies this woman was a widow burying her only son. This was not her first time walking through heartbreak; she had buried a husband before. You may feel like you’ve experienced loss after loss, getting hit by grief until you feel entirely overwhelmed.

The encouraging truth of the Gospel is that God is close to the brokenhearted.

He sees you in your pain.
He sees you in your grief.
He sees you in your shame and heartbreak.

Notice also that there is no record of this woman praying or calling out to Jesus at this moment. She didn't have the strength to ask. Yet, as Jesus approached, He saw her tears and began moving directly toward her.

As believers, we are called to reflect this trait. We live in a fast-paced culture where people mask their pain, but as the Body of Christ, we need eyes like Jesus, to truly see people beyond outward appearances and notice where they are hurting.

His Heart Toward You Is Compassion

"...and he said, 'Don't cry.'" Luke 7:13b

Jesus didn't just see the widow from a distance; He felt her pain.

One of the great challenges of the modern Church is that we can easily accumulate head knowledge (listening to sermons, reading books, and analyzing theology) without letting that truth migrate to our hearts. But compassion is only true compassion when it moves us to action.

Information must become Revelation, which ultimately leads to Transformation.
True compassion moves from the Head, to the Heart, to the Hands.

When Jesus felt compassion, He stepped into her sorrow. He touches the areas of our lives that feel numb or dead. If you are in a season where wave after wave of grief is hitting you, take heart: God can bring you safely to shore. Grief comes in waves, but with the Savior, those waves become manageable, and this painful season will not last forever.

His Power Is Miraculous

"Then he went up and touched the bier they were carrying him on, and the bearers stood still. He said, 'Young man, I say to you, get up!' The dead man sat up and began to talk, and Jesus gave him back to his mother." Luke 7:14–15

Jesus walked right into the middle of a funeral procession filled with tears and desperation, spoke a single word, and brought life out of death.

Just as in the Old Testament, where the prophetic ministries of Elijah and Elisha restored sons to grieving mothers (1 Kings 17, 2 Kings 4), Jesus fulfills and exceeds every prophetic promise. He is the ultimate Resurrection and Life.

The Bible tells us that after performing this miracle, "Jesus gave him back to his mother." He restored what was lost. He brought life back into a home that seemed completely stripped of a future.

Being the Hands and Feet Today

The same Spirit that raised Christ from the dead now lives in every believer (Ezekiel 37, Romans 8:11). We aren't called to be a crowd dictated by cultural trends, news cycles, or political shifts; we are called to be the crowd carrying the life and presence of Jesus Christ.

When we allow God’s truth to move from our heads into our hearts, we become His hands and feet in a hurting world:

We speak words that bring life instead of death.
We step into the lives of those who are grieving and offer real support.
We pray with expectation, believing that God still heals the sick, comforts the broken, and restores what feels dead.

No matter how dark or overwhelming your situation looks today, remember: nothing is impossible for Jesus. When your season of death and grief encounters the Prince of Life, hope is restored.
